BMI stands for Body Mass Index. This BMI will also be known as “Quetlet Index”. This BMI is one of the measures that a person can discover himself based on his weight and height. Most of the people believe that this measure is meant to find the fat content of their body but this is not the case. This BMI usually helps in finding what a person should weigh according to his height. Knowing this measure helps a person to know whether he is healthy enough or not. BMI is one of the tools, which can be used most generally to find whether a person is overweight or underweight or obese. In the period of 18th century, Mr Belgian polymath Adolphe Quetlet discovered this tool for whose honour this tool is named after his name. The simple formula that involves in calculating the BMI (Body Mass Index) is body weight divided by the square of his height. This is nothing but the unit kg/m2 which generally we used to see on Transport vehicles also to indicate the capacity of the vehicle. In Technical terms , this BMI can also be determine by BMI chart where BMI is a function of weight along horizontal axis and height along vertical axis and contour lines will be used for different values of BMI or different colours for different BMI categories. Generally, BMI average can differ according to the categories for which we are calculating it. For example, the average BMI for adult men will generally rises when he is becoming old but we can't say that this true for all the time, as it may even decline after some time and again starts rising. In general, the average BMI for men varies between 20 and 25 reaching approx 25. The average BMI defines the content of muscles and fat both. BMI can rise because of fat rise or muscles mass. But the one which rises because of muscle mass is always good as athletes have more average BMI because of their muscle mass. If we consider the same case, women generally will have more average BMI than men will. BMI is only one of the indicators to assess the health risk. The men whose BMI crosses 25 should consult the doctor to find out the remedies to be followed and take precautionary steps accordingly. Failing of these may cause problems, which may be prime or severe. Generally abdominal fat is more concerned than of fat in general and this can be identified with the help of this average BMI. The more general checking of this measure may help in taking precautionary steps far more advance than later as we already know better to handle in the beginning than in the last stage. For general information, the average BMI ranging between 18.5 to 25 is considered to be healthy and based on this itself, we can understand what is underweight and what is overweight and what is obese. The general Instructions to maintain or improve your average BMI are stated as below 1. Always try to be active as this helps in burning in your calories thereby maintaining good average BMI 2. Always try to increase your resistance of diet 3. Always observe what you are eating and how you are eating 4. Know the situation of your eating. When you are under stress and starts eating then it will have a major impact on your average BMI level.
